Hello Everyone,
I am Maggie T Ferrie, an artist currently living in Dundee, Scotland, and I have been drawing & painting and playing music since I was at school in the 1970s. (I was delighted to have won the Annual Art Prize for the 5 years I attended Lawside Academy from 1975 - 1980!)
For 4 years - from 1982 until 1986 - I lived in London working in The Kings' Arms in Sloane Square, and The Gin Palace in St James' square, SW1. On my days or evenings off I would usually sing and play guitar in bands. It was a wonderful experience, soaking up the cosmopolitan atmosphere and making friends and learning about life away from home! Moreover, it was while living in the West End of London that I had many fantastic opportunities to visit the beautiful and stunning paintings in the National Gallery. It was these kinds of experiences in London which gave me the inspiration to come back to Dundee and take up drawing and painting again!
I am largely self-taught, although I attended quite a few life drawing classes at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art back in the 1990s.
What inspires me to paint
The feeling I get from walking along the banks of the River Tay, and bathing my feet in the sea at Broughty Ferry Beach whilst gazing out at the endless horizons fills me with such joy! I am always inspired to try to capture the various shimmering hues and wide blue or stormy skies.
And in the Scottish countryside, or on holiday abroad such as in Austria this year I marvel at the amazing distant peaks & beautiful patchwork shades of the massive mountains.
This year I have been immersed in painting seascapes and landscapes - the sheer beauty of the outdoors is very intoxicating! Some days I can stand literally for hours just observing the swell, waves & changing colours of the sea, and the sky too filled with clouds of glorious pastel hues. It can also be very challenging due to the ever changing nature of the environment, but the end results of painting the outdoors during the changeable seasons is usually always spectacular!
Over the years I have shown individual paintings at many open exhibitions such as the Dunkeld Summer Art Exhibition, Inverbervie Art Exhibition and Roseangle Art Gallery in Dundee, (where I won a few Awards) , and I have held two solo Art exhibitions; in Kirriemuir's Bank St Gallery and the Dunkeld Dioscesan Centre (which were a great success selling over two-thirds of my art works at both!). In 2008, I had the surprise honour of having my Sam & Grace painting win The Peoples' Choice at the Meffan Art Gallery, Forfar!
